Not Good
Husband's Sperm Count Dropped. 13 million per ML with 17% motility. Sucks.

Jackie, yes, let's stay in touch. My husband is getting varicocele surgery in a few weeks. That's what we finally decided. I've been unsure about the lab results. The high counts came from RE who did our IUIs. Part of me thinks it was her agenda in order to get us to do IVF or stay working with her rather than to go to the urologist. I don't know. I'm confused. But what I do know is that no one has figured out why I'm not pregnant other than the fact that my husband has a varicocele.
it's a shame we have to resort to thinking those things, but i totally understand what you're saying.. hopefully there's another reason to explain the rise and dip of the count. i am learning that medicine is not an exact science, something that i sort of didn't realize before. the reason we've gotten to explain why i am not pregnant after nine months of trying is low sperm count (1 mil) and the varicocele issue. what we don't know for certain (and medical science can't tell us) is whether fixing the varicocele veins will increase the count and get me pregnant. i just re-read this last sentence. geez. do we really know anything for certain? anyways, all i can do is keep being optimistic and proactive while remaining cool, calm, and collected. piece of cake, right?
we met with the urologist today. he told us the pros and cons of the surgery and our chances of conceiving if we don't pursue any option at all. he said we have about 1% chance of conceiving each month, as opposed to 20% by couples who have no issues. he said that about 70% of men who have this surgery show improvement in their sperm, which can be seen about 3-4 months later, but may take up to one year. my husband is also taking fertilaid. he scheduled the surgery for next friday. the surgery costs $6,000 which is covered by insurance BUT not if it's related to infertility. :/
all of this is so tough since we don't know whether the surgery will work. but then again we don't know if iui or ivf will work either, although i don't believe we are candidates for iui right now. for us, we decided to try this route first. my husband is great and hopeful and i am so lucky for that. i will be hopeful too. i have to be. no.. i want to be. that's our update for now.
Jackie, we decided to go ahead with the varicocele fix. First off, it's $6000 vs. $21000 for IVF. Second off, we actually know that the problem is my husband's sperm count. I've come up clear. So it makes sense to fix what we absolutely know is broken. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. We're scheduled for 3 weeks from today.
laney, thanks for asking! the surgery went very well. it was outpatient. they wheeled dh away around 10:30am and the doc came to tell me everything was fine around 12:15pm. i don't know exactly when the surgery started or ended though. they used general anesthesia on dh. he was groggy after the procedure. we left the outpatient center around 1:30pm.
the doc told us to ice the area for two days, 15min on and 15min off. when we got home, dh spent the rest of the day on the couch. he played xbox and watched a movie. he was eating pretty normal also. dh didn't really feel pain yesterday. he slept normal. today dh feels like he has a pulled muscle, but that didn't stop him/us from going out to breakfast.
the doc gave him two prescriptions - one for antibiotics and the other was vicodin for pain. he hasn't had to take the vicodin.
oh, his throat did hurt yesterday and today. the nurse told him it was because they put a mask over his mouth which i think may be standard procedure when they use general anesthesia. maybe his mouth was open during the procedure and made his throat dry?? he took tylenol for the throat pain and he's been thirsty and drinking ice water and juice. the doc wants to see him in one month for a post-op.
i was so nervous yesterday. it's the not knowing that's scary. but everything turned out great. and i am sure it will turn out great for u both as well.
now we wait. as u know it takes 3-4 months for new supply to come in. i guess around that time we'll do another analysis and see what the results are.

post-op update: since the varicocele surgery, dh has had some swelling, soreness, and tenderness in the area. he has been icing it often. the surgeon's office called yesterday to see how he was doing and they were not surprised that he is still sore. they told him to keep icing it.
the soreness has not changed our lives greatly, though there are some things he's/we've changed. he's able to go to work, run errands, and do day to day things. but he hasn't run or played soccer since the surgery (7/9). he wants to try to play soccer this week, so let's see how it goes. but eight days post-op, he was feeling well enough to BD.
so.. little by little. i think rest and ice are the keys.

my dh had surgery on both varicocele veins in the beginning of july. just over three months after the surgery, dh did a sperm analysis. the surgeon called us this past weekend to let us know the motility went from 20% to 50%. the fertility doc told me they like to see about 50% in motility, so we're very happy with the increase.
the count was a bit lower. two things i want to point out. first, i am not sure the exact before and after numbers, b/c dh spoke with doc. second, for the sperm analysis test, they told us to abstain for 2 days. my dh had the appt on monday AM and we BD saturday nite. technically this is not two full days, it's about 1.5. next time we will abstain for at least two full days.
the surgeon (urologist) had told us that it takes at least 3-4 months for the new sperm supply to show up, and even thereafter it can keep increasing.
it appears that the surgery was effective considering the motility. time will tell concerning the count.
dh continues to take fertilaid every day. he's been doing that for a few months. he also takes a multi-vitamin.

ReplyDeleteyep, we're in the same situation. the low sperm count, motility, and morphology are the only issues the docs found. i checked out fine.
